Works by Robert Meldrum

Works containing narratives and conceptual ideas prior to any additional mark making best summarises Robert Meldrums art practice. In works that include centrally placed texts these initial ideas have remained overt, while in others, like the forested landscapes and angular ‘modernist’ abstractions, the origins behind them are mostly obscured. The Exhibition takes its title from a Hip Hop record of the 1980s with Malcome X’s oratory set to a rhythm.“I just liked listening to his voice and the whole idea of structuring one thing around another. He was a political figure but the record catches non political universal truths in it. I liked the way it simplified without diminishing his voice.”With references including maps, signs, origami, games, literature, mythology and science fiction, these artworks provide a composite portrait of culture. It’s a very ‘Arty’ art practice also. Self-aware of art history and arts co evolution. However, an emphasis on the works physical construction, with raw linens, jutes, domestic objects and building materials, along with a very kinetic application of paint, underline the primacy of each artwork as very separate physical presences. Removed from the very ideas that initiated them. The display shown here is from the last five years and forms part of a larger body of work created over the same period.‘In 2020 the idea was just to do a few more paintings, catalogue them, and do a quick show in London. Then the lockdowns arrived, soon after I got into some building work. It was a very stop start couple of years for sure. But I ended up actually doing far far more additional work than ever planned. More than enough for a catalogue and its nice to have an excess of what to actually show. I am very lucky to have done this and thanks to Alan Bond Photography, Will Heap, C.D.Twins, E.M.S, Spectrum, Print in Time, and above all thanks to my Parents and Family who without none of this would be here at all.’
