1939 was the year of Gone With The Wind, Stagecoach, The Wizard of Oz and Mr Smith Goes To Washington. Amongst these, and the other films nominated for Best Picture at the 12th Academy Awards was Goodbye, Mr. Chips, scripted by R C Sherriff. As part of Sherriff50, a commemoration of 50 years since Sherriff’s death, this Talk looks at the movies that made this the year, widely considered the greatest in film history.

This classic film was released in 1939, one of the greatest years in Hollywood’s history, and earned R C Sherriff an Oscar nomination for his screenplay.
