Join us to celebrate 40 years of the Riverhouse Barn with this relaxed Sunday afternoon concert - featuring Quartet Concrète, a string quartet formed at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama - alongside tea and cake!
40 years ago, a semi-derelict barn was transformed into an arts centre for the community. Digging out the old floor, lowering the ground level by 18 inches, spreading the hardcore and pouring new concrete quite literally laid the bedrock of everything that followed. Remarkably, this was achieved by a band of local residents volunteering their time. To celebrate their achievement, a concert was held on the bare concrete floor amongst the puddles - the roof was not yet finished. It was given by a prodigious young chamber group.
Forty years on, we are marking the milestone in the same spirit: another remarkable young chamber group, though this time with a roof overhead and not a puddle in sight. Expect special guests, the music of Beethoven and a cake made for the occasion. All funds raised go to the Barn - the place those volunteers built, and that the community has kept going ever since.
